Overview

This Privacy Policy explains what information sanechaos (https://sanechaos.com) collects when you visit or use the site, how we use it, and the choices you have. By using the site you agree to the practices described here. If you do not agree, please do not use the site.

Information we collect

You can read the opening of every article without an account. We collect information in these cases:

• Account information. When you sign in with Google, we receive your Google account name, email address, profile picture and a unique account identifier. We never see your Google password.
• Comments. A comment is stored with its text, the time you posted it, and your name, profile picture and account identifier. Comments are public and show your name and picture.
• Likes. When you like an article, we store your account identifier against that article so a second tap removes your like instead of adding another.
• Usage limits. To stop spam, we keep a simple counter of how many likes and comments an account has made in the last minute.
• Technical information. Like most websites, our hosting and cloud providers automatically record standard server logs, such as IP address, browser type, the pages requested and timestamps.
• Messages you send us. If you email us, we receive your email address and whatever you choose to include.

Cookies and browser storage

We do not use advertising or analytics cookies, and we do not track you across other websites.

When you sign in, Firebase Authentication keeps your session in your browser's storage so that you stay signed in, and we keep a small flag there noting that a session exists. Both are needed for sign-in to work, and they are removed when you sign out or clear your browser data. Google may also set its own cookies while you sign in, under Google's own policies.

Some articles include videos from YouTube (through its privacy-enhanced youtube-nocookie.com domain) or Vimeo. A video only loads when you press play, and that provider may then collect information or set cookies under its own policy.

How we use information

• To run the site: signing you in, unlocking full articles, showing comments and counting likes.
• To keep the site secure and to prevent spam and abuse.
• To reply to your messages.
• To find and fix technical problems.

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for advertising.

Who we share information with

We use Google Firebase (Authentication, Cloud Firestore and Cloud Functions) to sign readers in and to store comments and likes, and other hosting providers to serve the site. These providers process information on our behalf under their own terms and privacy policies.

Comments are visible to anyone who visits the article. We may also disclose information if the law requires it, or to protect the rights, safety and security of sanechaos and its readers.

How long we keep information

We keep your account information and content for as long as your account is active or the site needs it for the purposes above. You can delete your own comments at any time. If a deleted comment has replies, it stays as a "deleted" placeholder so the conversation still makes sense, but your name and the text are removed. Server logs are kept by our providers for a limited period under their own retention settings.

Your choices and rights

• Sign out at any time from the account menu at the top of the page.
• Delete your own comments whenever you like.
• Ask us to give you a copy of, correct or delete the personal information we hold about you by emailing hello@sanechaos.com.
• Clear your browser's stored data to remove the sign-in session and flag from your device.

Depending on where you live, you may have further rights under local law, such as the right to object to or restrict how your information is used. Contact us and we will respond in line with the law that applies to you.

Security

The site is served over HTTPS, and sign-in is handled by Google and Firebase so we never handle your password. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.

Children's privacy

sanechaos is not directed at children under 13, or under the higher minimum age in your country, and we do not knowingly collect their personal information. If you believe a child has given us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.

International transfers

Our service providers may process information in countries other than your own, including the United States. By using the site you understand that your information may be transferred there.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page shows when it last changed.
